Excess magnesium in the body can cause gastrointestinal disorders, decreased cardiovascular function, renal dysfunction (mild insufficiency), muscle weakness, difficulty breathing, mental confusion. Too much magnesium damages the heart, which can result in hypotension. Excess magnesium in the blood can also cause arrhythmias. Intake during pregnancy and lactation should be made in consultation with a physician.
